Episode 416: Police Academy (1984)

Police Academy (1984)Watch the trailer!

This pairing celebrates the tradition of combining law enforcement, action, and comedy with two films, both from 1984! First up, director Hugh Wilson shows us one possible result of relaxing admissions in law enforcement! In "Police Academy," we meet Carey Mahoney (Steve Guttenberg), a constant recipient of law enforcement being given a choice: Jail or joining the police academy, but with one condition: He can't quit. He can, of course, be thrown out, which sets the stage for a screwball comedy that began a long-running franchise! Upon arriving at the academy, Mahoney first makes the acquaintance of cadet Karen Thompson (Kim Cattrall). While pretending to be one of the instructors, Mahoney also meets Lt. Harris (G. W. Bailey), who takes an instant dislike to Mahoney's recklessness. He is assigned to room with Eugene Tackleberry (David Graf), a gung-ho weapons enthusiast. He is also reunited with Larvell Jones (Michael Winslow) who he met when he was last arrested. With fellow cadets Moses Hightower (Bubba Smith), Leslie Barbara (Donovan Scott), George Martin (Andrew Rubin), Doug Fackler (Bruce Mahier), Laverne Hooks (Marion Ramsey), and Harris' assistant instructor Sgt. Debbie Callahan (Leslie Easterbrook), he tries to keep out of Lt. Harris' way. Unfortunately Harris has recruited two cadets, Chad Copeland (Scott Thomson) and Kyle Blankes (Brant von Hoffman), to spy on their fellow cadets. But ultimately, inspide of the inept leadership of Commandant Eric Lassard (George Gaynes), the cadets not only come together, but represent themselves well after being thrown into a truly harrowing situation! Also starring Ted Ross, Georgina Spelvin, and Doug Lennox!
