Episode 65: Pirate Radio (2009)

pirateradioGreat Britain, 1966 - The BBC was Mom-and-Pop-ing radio to death with its Leave it to Beaver-esque programming, which completely ignored the very height of the British rock scene (of which the United States was benefiting from in a major way)! But never fear, where there is rock and roll, there will be rebels, or in this case, literal pirates! Pirate Radio tells the story of Radio Rock (based on the real-life pirate radio vessel Radio Caroline), and the merry band of lunatics and rock loyalists who live in the Atlantic, just inside international waters, and brought the best rock and roll of the day to, at its peak, half of the population of Great Britain! Written and directed by Richard Curtis, and starring an amazing cast of lead and character actors, including Tom Sturridge, Bill Nighy, Tom Brooke, Rhys Darby, Nick Frost, Chris O'Dowd, Kenneth Branagh, Ralph Brown, Rhys Ifans, andPhilip Seymore Hoffman, this is a movie that'll have you rooting for the pirates in their fight against the forces of a corrupt, anal-retentive, overly-conservative government, all while rocking out to one of the best movie soundtracks of all time! Plus, find out why the hosts are returning to war-time England for their next two reviews, and what those movies might be!
